One of the Newcomerstown community’s icons, Millie Russell, will turn 100 years old on Tuesday, March 27, 2018.

Millie has nine children, 22 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Millie owned and ran "Corner Pizza" in Newcomerstown for two years. This was the only pizza shop in town at that time. Millie and her husband also owned and operated "Russell’s Dairy" from 1946-1959.

Millie has dedicated her life to the betterment of her community. In the early 1970's, Millie was active in a local Parents without Partners chapter. She served as president of this program for three years and was named "Single Parent of the Year" for Tuscarawas County.

Millie was a pivotal person in the start up of a local program called PACCT in the Newcomerstown Exempted Village School District. PACCT (Parents And Community Coming Together) was a program that partnered senior citizens with youth from the local schools. This program encouraged middle school and high school-aged children to engage in community service and spend time with local senior citizens. Millie worked with Pat Cadle, who was school counselor at the time, to start this program because they saw a need in the community for students to have a person to look up to. This program brought students and senior citizens together to play games and complete community service projects such as leaf raking and caroling. This program was a great addition for the school for several years. In 1992, Millie was honored along with nine other senior citizens with awards from the school district for their continued support and work in the PACCT program.

Millie was cook and manager of the Newcomerstown Senior Center for 16 years. Before she became the cook, she was president of the senior center. She was also president for two terms after her time as cook. She was instrumental is the fundraising for a new addition to the building. During her time with the center, her goal always was to increase membership and provide meaningful activities to its members.

In 2001, Millie was nominated and awarded the "Citizen's Honor Roll" award for our community. This award was given by the school district to citizens of the community that go above and beyond for the school.

Millie has definitely touched many lives throughout the course of her life. Her family is having an open house celebration on March 24, 2018 at Newcomerstown West School from 1:30-4 p.m.

Familh members said, "If Millie has touched your life in anyway, please come celebrate with our family."
