The 130th Banquet of West Lafayette and Ridgewood High Schools Alumni was Saturday June 2, at Ridgewood High School.

A flag ceremony was presented by the Coshocton County Color Guard, under the direction of Capt. Brad Collmar. The meal, prepared by the parishioners of the Fresno United Methodist Church, under the direction of Marilyn Wyler, served over 200 meals of swiss steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad and pie. Boy Scout Troop 419 and Leaders Jimmy and Carla Miller helped with the serving and cleanup.

Attendees were entertained in the auditorium by the Ridgewood High School Jazz Band under the direction of RHS Alumnus Mr. John Lindig, 1989.

Cathy McCrea, President, welcomed attendees. Recognition was given to the following honored classes: 70 years- 1948: Donald Henderson, Francis Jefferies, Norma Jean (Regula) McClure, Miriam (Hinds) Shurlow, and Earl Patterson; 60 years – 1958: Violet (Grewell) Myers, Mary Jane (Porteus) Kreidler, Joan (Jennings) Patterson, Tom Patterson, LaVonne (Thomas) Robinson, and Paul Zinkon; 50 years -1968: Ron Bible, Kay (Durben) Braniger, William Guilliams, Pauline (Hoffman) Stimmel, Cheryl (McRoberts) Hampton, Nancy (Sturtz) Bryan, and Garry Thomas; 40 Years – 1978: Ruth (Scaife) Gay, John Hardesty, JoEllen (Markley) Gellart, and Lynn (Davis) Russell. Each honoree was given their class flower and a special card to commemorate the occasion.

The 2018 Scholarship winners were present and recognized. Hunter Mizer, son of Jason and Shandy Mizer and Kenneth Lott, son of Kevin and Amy Lott were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Alumni Scholarship fund.

A special honor was given from the Distinguished Citizen Wall of Fame committee represented by John Riebesell to the late Dr. J.L Burt (WL 1930). Dr. Burt was a science, biology and health teacher at Ridgewood High School from 1967 – 1971 and also had a local veterinary practice. He held degrees and memberships in many areas, including: The Ohio State University, D.V.M. and B.S., Univ. of Michigan, Masters in Public Health, Univ. of North Carolina, Ph.D. in Public Health, Muskingum College, Secondary Teaching Degree, Diplomate A.B.V.P.H. (Comparative Medicine), F.A.P.H.A., F.R.SH., and F.C.F.A. His daughter Lori (Burt) Hamilton was present to accept his induction to the Wall of Distinguished Citizens. A plaque will be added to the Distinguished Wall of Fame Honorees.

Also recognized were 36 veterans who graduated from West Lafayette High School or Ridgewood High School including: Tom Apple, Larry Blair, Larry Bryan, Gary Carpenter, Jack L. Carpenter, Donis Emler, Raymond Gardner, James Groves, Orville Groves, William Groves, William Guilliams, Jerry Hampton, Elizabeth J. (Sharier) Herrell, Luther Glen Hill, Roger Hill, Jake Honabarger, Francis Jeffries, Allen McCormick, Alan Miller, Neal Miller, J. Robert Miller, Thelma (Carpenter) Moffitt, Francis Overholt, Doug Owens, Dan Patterson, Earl Patterson, Jack Patterson, Tom Patterson, John F. Powell, Jim Ronshousen, Charles Shaffer, Raymond Shroyer, Earl Shurtz and, Garry Thomas. Each veteran was given a Patriotic decoration and decal. Other door prizes and table flowers were given to guests.

A brief business meeting was held to install the slate of officers for 2019: Nancy (Hill) Porteus- President (’66); Carolyn (Gress) McElfresh, 1st Vice President (’76); Barbara (Bickel) Wilson, 2nd Vice President (’66); Sandy Shaw, Treasurer, (76); Susan (Shaw) Gordon, (WL ’64)

A donation of $300 was voted to give to the Ridgewood Music Boosters.
