I have read and heard it said that so often when we receive a gift, we appreciate the gift but seem to forget about the giver. I believe this is especially true with blessings we receive from God. We enjoy the blessings, but too many times we neglect the one who supplied them.

I was reminded of this earlier in the week when I received a very special gift. I was very excited to have gotten it, and for just a few minutes I neglected to thank the one who delivered it, which then gave me the opportunity to explain how this can sometimes happen with blessings I receive from God.

As we have arrived at the time of year that our focus is on the giving and getting of gifts I think of the best, most precious gift I have ever received. This of course is my salvation, bought and paid for with the blood of Christ, yet it was freely given to me. It was mine for the asking.

Without the birth of Jesus there would be no gift of salvation, for without His birth, there would be no sacrificial death; no cleansing bloodshed. I thank God daily for the gift of His Son; the baby Jesus, born and laid in a manger so many years ago. I believe Luke 2:11 says it best. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

As the time of gift giving is upon us I pray I will keep an attitude of thanks for each gift. I pray especially that I will remember always the words of 2 Corinthians 9:15. Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

For God’s unspeakable gift, the greatest gift, most precious blessing ever given, I’m thankful.
