PORT WASHINGTON — When the Super Bowl aired on Sunday evening, one area business and its employees was excited to know that one of its products was being used by NFL fans at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Jim Bates, owner of Bates Metal Products Inc., in Port Washington, said one of his company’s newest products, a mobile hot/cold serving kiosk food cart, will be located in a food service area at the Superbowl stadium. These new carts can be used for cold foods such as sandwiches, drinks or salads or hot foods like pizza. It can be used totally cold without electricity via an ice convection system or with electric warmers or both.
The kiosk’s cold cart system is produced after freezing interlocking cold cells in a standard 0° freezer, then inserting them into the product bays. The insulated cold management container will keep pre-chilled products in the mid-30’s temperatures for up to 24 hours.
"This new product shows our company’s diversity," Bates said. "It’s also pretty cool that one of our products will be used at the Superbowl this year."
So far, they have made more than 40 food carts for schools across the southern United States. Bates said they currently have one order for 10 more set for the Mercedes Benz Stadium and another 70 for other venues.
Cold Sell is the company ordering the carts. They contacted Jim about a year ago and explained what the concept was they were looking for. He turned the project over to his grandson, Zack Bates, a designer and fabricator for Bates Metal Products.
Zack said, "The biggest challenge was keeping up with the design changes to reach the final product." The final product is one the whole company is proud of, he added.
Bates Metal Products has been in business for 63 years and employs 75 workers. Another one of the company’s current projects is for Circle K convenience stores. The Polar Pop displays in those stores are being refurbished with new facades by Bates Metal Products. They have already made hundreds of them for stores across the United States and many more are on order.
