The annual Rachel B. Stoffer Spelling Bee was hosted at the Newcomerstown Middle School on January 28.
Thirty-eight students participated, and after 10 rounds of competition, eighth grade student Rickey Owens, daughter of Amy Daugherty, Newcomerstown, became this year's champion by successfully spelling the word "relinquish."
First runner-up was sixth grader Gunner Mitchell, son of Catherie Mitchell, and second runner-up was sixth grader Bo Black, son of Sam and Carly Hart, all of Newcomerstown.
School officials offered congratulations to these three students, as well as all those who entered the Spelling Bee, "for having courage enough to get up in front of the entire student body!"
