It’s time to register for the 2019-2020 Newcomerstown Preschool School year. Students must be at least 3 years old by Aug. 1 and must NOT turn 5 years old before Aug. 1. On Friday, Feb. 22, Newcomerstown Middle School eighth grade students will have the opportunity to spend the day at Newcomerstown High School for the district’s first ever "Transition Day." Students will be paired with an NHS freshman or sophomore and spend three periods in class with their paired student, listen to junior and senior students talk about their experiences at NHS, spend a period with students and learning about clubs offered in the building, a period with Mr. Dirk Gadd (NHS Asst. Principal) and Mr. Mark Wolff (Athletic Director) talking about a typical school day and athletics, and then two periods with Mrs. Liggitt (Guidance Counselor) and Mr. Josh Branch (NHS Principal) learning about the different required classes. Eighth grade students will get off the bus or be dropped off at the High School on Feb. 22. They will also be picked up or get on the bus at the High School at the end of the day.
The Newcomerstown High School Spring Sports Parent/?Athlete meeting for students 7-12 will be in the High School Commons Area on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m. Any parent/?athlete who attended the fall or winter meeting does not need to arrive until 7 p.m.
The Newcomerstown High School Winter Sports Award Ceremony will be on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. in the high school gym.
The Newcomerstown Public Library will host a Pearl Valley Cheese Tasting Event on Friday, March 1, at 6 p.m. Taste Pearl Valley’s award-winning cheese and learn now it is made. Reserve a spot by calling the Newcomerstown Library at 740-498-8228 or stopping in. This event will be held in the Library’s Annex.
The Library is also hosting a "Blind Date with a Book or Film" all this February. Participants can take their blind date (a book or film) home and rate how they do. Just turn in a "Rate Your Date" slip for a tasty reward and to enter the prize drawing at the end of the month.
The Library will also host a Chilly Chili Run/?Walk on Saturday, March 16 at 11 a.m. Lineup is at 10 a.m. Participants can run or walk 1.4 miles on a laid-out course and have a chili or hot dog lunch at the end of the walk. The cost is $5 for single entries. $10 for families without a size limit. All proceeds will go to Toys for Local Tots.
Class of 1957
The Newcomerstown High School Class of 1957 will be having a luncheon at noon on March 5 at the Unusual Junction at West Lafayette.
Cheer tryouts for Newcomerstown High School JV/Varsity squads for next school year will be Friday, March 8, at 7 p.m. Tryout sign up sheets and schedules for interested eighth grade students can be found in the Newcomerstown Middle School office. Practice for tryouts will be Tuesday, March 5, from 6-8 p.m. An optional open mat will be available Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The Lone Star Lodge will host a spaghetti dinner on Friday, Friday, March 1. The meal includes spaghetti with thick meaty sauce, salad, hot garlic bread served "fresh from the oven" at the table, dessert and beverage. Serving is from 4-7 p.m.
Night at the Races
WEST LAFAYETTE — The Ridgewood Bock R Foundation will host its fourth annual "Night at the Races" event to benefit the foundation and its continuing mission to improve athletic facilities within the district. Night at the Races features video-animated horseracing projected on a large screen. The event is Saturday, March 9, at 6 p.m. at the Lake Park Pavilion. A $10 cover charge will be taken at the door the night of the event. Attendees will receive five tickets to be entered into drawings that night to win prizes valued at over $200 apiece. Prizes include a Yeti cooler, flat screen TVs, and a PlayStation 4. A 50/?50 drawing is also planned. Anyone with questions about the event should visit the Block R Foundation Facebook page or speak with any Block R Foundation member.
The Isleta United Methodist Church is taking spring flower orders through March 3. Those interested can order flats of 36 annuals for $13.25, 5" pots of specialty plants for $3.50, 10" hanging baskets for $14, and one gallon pot perennials for $7.75. There is a huge list of flowers available from the grower, Molesky Greenhouse of Alliance. Flowers can be picked up Saturday, May 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church.
