COLUMBUS — Indian Valley started fast.
As it turned out, the Braves quick start wasn't enough to overcome Sandusky Perkins' strength at the top of its lineup.
The Braves built a 33-10 lead in the opening round of the Division II State Duals on Sunday, but the Pirates won five straight bouts -- including four pins -- to pull out a 35-33 victory over the Braves.
"Indian Valley did a great job in the lower matches, but our kids stepped up and did the job when we needed it," said Perkins coach Travis Crabtree, a Claymont graduate.
Perkins got pins from Lucas Salmon (170), Gabriel Papineau (182), Tai Carter (195) and Sam McNulty (220) to cut Indian Valley's lead to 33-32 heading into the final match, where Kyler Capizzi won a 5-1 decision to seal the deal.
"Coach Crabtree does a great job with that team," said Indian Valley coach Nick Swaldo. "He had his big boys ready to go and it showed.
"We were excited to be here, but we wanted to win this round."
The Braves got off to a solid start.
Perkins won the opening match, but freshman Trevor Myers battled back from a first-period deficit to win by pin at 113.
"He's an athlete and he battles," Swaldo said of the freshman 113-pounder. "It's a lot of fun to coach those guys."
Perkins won the match at 120, but Roger Naylor had a quick pin at 126 and Brady O'Connor picked up a forfeit to give the Braves an 18-7 lead.
Dalton Burcher and Adam Lenhoff had back-to-back wins that made the score 27-7 and Zach Love got a pin at 160 to make it 33-10.
It was all Perkins from there, however.
The Pirates, who won the Region 10 championship with a 29-27 decision against Wauseon, advanced to the semifinals against top-seeded Graham.
Indian Valley, the Region 13 champion, was eliminated early, but Swaldo is looking ahead.
"We've got some good, young guys on this team and we're looking forward to working with them," he said. "We're excited for our future."
