TEN YEARS AGO - 2009

The mobile home of Randy and Viola Bradford of Newcomerstown lost the roof and 90 percent of its contents when a strong tornado-strength wind lifted the top off the home.

Members Shannon Lawrence, Amanda Wright and Kristen Carpenter of the Statements by Shannon salon in West Lafayette, met famous stylist Kelly Cardenas in Las Vegas for training.

Journey’s End Ministries had a short month in January; with all the snow days, but managed to give food to 602 families (2518 people), give away over 10,000 items of clothing and miscellaneous , and feed 25 at a dinner.

Local basketball: Ridgewood boys lose to Sandy Valley 60-36, Conotton Valley 65-62, Hiland 87-60 and won over Tusky Catholic 50-53; Indian Valley won over Tusky Valley 51-47 and lost to Claymont 50-49. Newcomerstown won over Garaway 59-44 and lost to Hiland 76-65.

Newcomerstown Wrestlers Bryce Lenzo, Gavin Weaver, Adam Lenhoff, Dylan Little, Austin Stringer, Kole Carpenter and Jarred Weaver to compete at OAC State Wrestling meet on March 21 in Marion.

Newcomerstown Elks Hoop Shoot winners were Robb Hendershot, Lyndley Hannahs and Dennelle Thursby, all of Newcomerstown, and Ryan Gress, Larry Leach, Randi Ridenbaugh, Megan Mardis, Dane Sherman, Kerrie Bahmer, Ben Hill, Christopher Olinger and Tori Ridenbaugh, all of the Ridgewood school district.

Trojans won 58-45 over Indian Valley at the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Gund Arena 69-61 over Lakeland Raiders, and 70-45 against Strasburg to improve their record to 13-5; Indian Valley lost to Coshocton 50-43; Ridgewood lost 74-57 to Tuscarawas Central Catholic and to Garaway 71-58.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph (Martha) Tilton, Newcomerstown, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, Feb. 20.

Ridgewood Generals finshed basketball season as Inter Valley Conference runner-up behind Tuscarawas Central Catholic.

General Kyle Hamilton named to IVC All-Star team.

FORTY YEARS AGO - 1979

George Braniger, Newcomerstown R.D. 3, re-elected chairman of Coshocton Soil and Water Conservation District board.

Trojan wrestlers Steve Hunt, Van Brown, Jeff Mathews, Gary Scarbrough, Alan MacKinnon, Richard Varner and Brad Nolan advance to district tournament.

Indian Valley South won its ninth straight sectional tournament crown with a 78-34 win over Guernsey Catholic and 52-46 over Buckeye Trail. Newcomerstown defeated Lakeland 66-47 and lost to Zanesville Rosecrans 50-30 in sectional tournament.

 

FIFTY YEARS AGO - 1969

Sherry Watson, Newcomerstown, has honor of starting official broadcasting on New Philadelphia’s new radio station WNPQ, where she is employed as station programmer/traffic.

Jenny Parrish, Indian Valley South High School sophomore, selected member of Ohio Youth Choir, which will tour Europe in the summer.

Trojans lose tournament game to Indian Valley North 71-53.

Coach Dick Gummere led the Trojans to a 10-9 record, first winning season in 19 years.

Trojans bow out of tourney with loss to Cadiz Cardinals.
