NEW PHILADELPHIA — Along with the Adult Chorus and baritone soloist Ron Barkett, the Tuscarawas Philharmonic will perform a concert titled "Mystical Dreams" at 7:30 p.m. on March 9 at the Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center.
"The concert came together in my mind as an opportunity for players, singers and listeners to take a sonic, emotional bath," said Music Director Eric Benjamin. "And I love being able to share this music with the people in our community."
The program will include Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Norfolk Rhapsody No. 1 and Claude Debussy’s Nocturnes. Vaughan William’s Five Mystical Songs will also be on the program, and it will feature the Adult Chorus, as well as the Kent State University Tuscarawas Chorus under the direction of Shawna Hinkle. Barkett will be the featured soloist in this piece, which Benjamin describes as "drifting in a stream of soft harmonies and dreamy orchestral sounds."
Barkett is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, majoring in voice performance. Since 1983, he has been Director of Music at the First United Methodist Church of Dover. He also directs the Chancel Choir, Handbell Choir and Brass Choir, and he teaches music at the church.
He has performed with the Philharmonic many times over the last 37 years, as well as with the Summit Choral Society of Akron, Franciscan University in Steubenville, Baldwin-Wallace University and The University of Mount Union in Alliance.
The Children’s Chorus will perform in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center beginning at 6:45 p.m. Laura Barkett will direct the chorus, with Carolyn Wallace accompanying.
Tickets are available at www.TuscarawasPhilharmonic.org or by calling the Performing Arts Center box office at 330-308-6400. Tickets range from $24-$36, with student and senior discounts available.
