Description: For three days, the skies above Ashland will be filled with color as hot air balloons take to the air for the 29th Ashland BalloonFest. The festival begins in the evening on Thursday, June 27 and continues throughout the day on Friday and Saturday. BallonFest includes events like Balloon Glow, stage performances, balloon races, sports tournaments and other competitions with the chance to win cash prizes. With events for children and adults, BalloonFest offers a wide variety of amusement for the whole family.

Description: Explore the Ohio State Reformatory and learn about the 130-year-old prison made famous as the setting of “The Shawshank Redemption.” Daily self-guided tours run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through August. Or explore the spookier side of the prison on monthly ghost walks and hunts. In August the reformatory will host a three-day celebration in honor of the 25th anniversary of “The Shawshank Redemption.” Attend a screening of the film, meet cast members and tour parts of the prison featured in the film. Screening tickets and self-guided tour tickets are $25; cast meet-and-greet tickets are $225.

Mohican State Park

Description: Hiking at the Mohican State Park is a year-round affair, not just for the summertime. Specialized hikes through the park include a Bigfoot Hike on Saturday, July 13, a fall hike to take in the vibrant leaf change on Sept. 28, Spooky Mohican Hike on Saturday, Oct. 26. The state park and the area in general in the southern part of Ashland County is a destination for hiking, but also for camping, boating and fishing. The state park is surrounded by canoe liveries and there are six picnic areas in the park and opportunities to fish in the Clear Fork river, Wolf Creek and the Pleasant Hill Lake.

Description: Two of Ashland County’s premier car shows will take place within a week of each other — the first, the 19th annual Loudonville Car Show comes first with classic cars lining the Main Street and side streets. Over 600 cars were featured in 2018’s event. Second, is the Ashland Downtown Dream Cruise and Car Show. The show is an opportunity to see hundreds of cars and money from the show supports the Ashland Police Division’s Shop with a cop program. Over 600 cars were featured in Ashland’s show too, which also featured local music and food along Main Street.
