Instead of the walking dead, Newcomerstown will be hosting the walking cute on Saturday, Oct. 26, as local children will be invited to parade down Main Street in their Halloween costumes as part of an afternoon of candy, hot dogs and fun provided by the Chamber of Commerce, the Village of Newcomerstown, the Newcomerstown Public Library and local businesses.

The day starts with a Kids Parade of costumes at 2:30 p.m. down Main Street in Newcomerstown. Children who want to participate should meet in front of Coshocton Drivers Training and HER Realty offices on Main Street, which will be blocked off for the event. Kids will walk down Main Street, led by "Mater" of the "Cars" movie. Mater is provided by Jim’s Towing of Newcomerstown. The parade will end at the Newcomerstown Public Library, where Baker’s IGA will be grilling hot dogs.

Following the parade, Newcomerstown businesses will be hosting their annual Trick or Treat event until 4:30 p.m. Participating businesses will have a picture of Mater in the window. Other businesses and organizations, including churches, are invited to be part of a "Trunk or Treat" in the Newcomerstown Public Library’s parking lot. To register for that, contact Cody Addy, Library Director, at 740-498-8228.

The events at the library will also include guessing the weight of a large pumpkin, voting for a favorite "trunk" and a drawing for a free pumpkin. The Trunk or Treat provides an opportunity for those that would typically not participate because of location or safety concerns. It offers a safer environment for the children than running through busy parking lots while merchants are conducting business and crossing streets while it is extra busy.

Spaces are limited and will be available on a first call basis, so those wanting to take part should call the Library at 740-498-8228 to sign up.

For more information about the day’s activities, visit the Newcomerstown Chamber of Commerce Facebook page for more info.

All ages are invited to participate in groups of three to six, or just sign up and be placed in a g group. Time slots are available between 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. each day.

Although not a Halloween event, the Library will also be hosting an "All Pumpkin Cook-Off" on Friday, Oct. 18. While registration is now over, visitors to the Library can see entries in three categories: Soup/Salad, Entree, Dessert.
