Please tell us a little about Silkworm Flower Shop:

Do you want a flower arrangement or gift item that takes a step beyond the ordinary? My goal at the Silkworm is to add colors to your life through flowers. Whatever the occasion may be, my staff and I are here to help you through what may be a very difficult time, or to celebrate a joyous occasion in the life of a loved one, friend, or sweetheart.

The Silkworm is a full service floral shop and gift corner. We offer flower arrangements for all those important times including romantic holidays such as Valentine’s Day, anniversaries and other special days, as well as festive holiday arrangements, beautiful flower bouquets for Mother’s Day, and thoughtful funeral baskets for the funeral home or gravesite. We also provide balloons for birthdays and other occasions, as well as grave blankets and grave saddles. I am happy to provide other services for out-of-town clients that include looking after your loved one’s gravesite with fresh flowers, or updating their resting place for each holiday. Prom and homecoming corsages are also a service I love providing for the kiddos of Newcomerstown and surrounding areas. The Silkworm Staff works very close with our wedding couples to make sure Silkworm flowers make your wedding day complete. We also carry a line of craft items to make your visit to the Silkworm a one stop-shop. In addition, we are very excited to announce confirmation has been received that Hallmark Cards will soon be added to our offerings at the Silkworm Flower Shop.

How did you develop your concept or idea for the business?

"I have always had a love for flowers and gifts in general. I formerly worked for Morgan Pharmacy and Gift Shop, and also for the previous owner of the Silkworm Flower Shop. They decided to sell the business, and I knew I wanted to continue to provide a flower shop in the community I was born and raised in. I feel like I grew up at the Silkworm, and learned every aspect of the business from the ground up over the years. This opportunity came at a time I was looking for something a little different from my everyday life. It was very important to mesh my love of the gift type items at Morgan’s Pharmacy along with the flowers that often accompany those gifts.

There is definitely a need for our little flower shop in Newcomerstown, and the business has flourished since purchasing the Silkworm in February of 2018. Owning the Silkworm is definitely a major highlight in my life.

What challenges do you face?

The holidays can be very busy, but I am so lucky to have a family that jumps in along with our staff to help whenever needed. The Silkworm is really a team effort. Sometimes the hours can be very long if we have several funerals at once, or we have a major holiday. However, I enjoy working with flowers and love putting my creative flair to work, so I find flower arranging therapeutic for my soul.

In addition, being a life-time resident of Newcomerstown, I am often originating something special for people that I have known my entire life. I want each expression of sympathy or gladness to be perfect. I strive to be caring and helpful to the people I see and interact with on a regular basis thru all my roles in the village of Newcomerstown".

What would you like to highlight for us?

"I love mingling with my customers of the Silkworm. The flower business is a little different arena from my other community involvement. I am a paramedic for NERS, and also serve as President. Village Council is another area of civic participation for me. In addition those activities, I am a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a CPR instructor and help wherever I can in Newcomerstown and the surrounding area. What can I say: I like to keep busy! I am lucky to be able to arrive at the flower shop every day, and fashion something bigger than myself. Flowers are such a great way to say you care, and I am beyond grateful to be able to provide this service in Newcomerstown.

One last thing I will share: Step back Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day is the top spot for flowers and gift giving. However, Valentine’s is a close second, so romance is alive and well in the village of Newcomerstown!"
