COSHOCTON -- A celebration of life for W. Darlene Cognion, 71, of Coshocton, was March 25, 2009, at the Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church. Pastor Everett Stoddard officiated with burial in the Prairie Chapel Cemetery. The Free Funeral Home in Coshocton was in charge of arrangements. She followed the light of heaven Friday evening, March 20, 2009, at her home with her family and cat, Tigger, at her side after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Coshocton County on May 27, 1937, the daughter of the late Emmett Kenneth and Florence Irene (Bender) Shaw.

Following her 1955 graduation from Roscoe High School, Darlene was employed at the J.J. Newberry store and the Star Drive-in. For over 30 years, she was a faithful worker at General Electric where she held various positions retiring in 1998 from the Marketing Division. She considered it an honor to be an elections poll-worker.

A lifetime member of the Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church, Darlene held many church offices including financial secretary and served on many church committees.

Darlene shared her love for people, especially children, by volunteering to help tutor students at Riverview School and gave time at Coshocton County Memorial Hospital as a Pink Lady and the Handicap Society. An avid Cleveland Indians fan, Darlene loved to garden and bird-watching, plus walking at the Towpath.

On June 27, 1969, she married her beloved husband, Leonard A. Cognion, who survives, along with all of the family members who were special to her including two sons, Randy K. (Laurie) Adams and Chris A. (Dianne McCoy) Adams, all of Fresno; two step-daughters, Rita L. Cognion, PhD, and husband George Ziga of Maui, Hawaii, and Ronda E. (John) Kenney of Newcomerstown; five grandchildren, Amanda and Clinton Adams, Eva Marie Adams, Shawn (Lindsay) Kenney and Shannon Kenney; three step-grandchildren, Tammy (Ed) Rexroad, Johnnie R. and Todd W. Kenney; three step-great-grandchildren, Hannah, Jessie and Alyson Rexroad; four brothers, Larry E. "Butch" Shaw of Coshocton, Jim R. (Karen) Shaw of Warsaw, Edward M. (Peggy) Shaw of Coshocton and Kevin R. Shaw of Warsaw; two sisters, Judy D. (Jim) Cunningham of Cooperdale and Rhea M. (Jack Olinger) Hampton of Coshocton; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Tracie D. Shaeffer of Warsaw, whom she raised as a daughter.

Darlene is now with her parents; a brother, Gary L. Shaw; and three sisters, Sandra Shaw, Linda Shaw and Sue McNichols.
