JOE E. PORTER
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Joe E. Porter, 47, of Port Washington, were July 8, 2009, at the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. Pastor Randy S. Gardiner conducted the services. Burial followed in Salem-Union Cemetery, Port Washington. He passed away Saturday afternoon, July 4, in the Mercy Medical Center Canton, following a short illness.
Joe was born in Coshocton on Sept. 27, 1961, and is survived by his mother, Carol Ann Neville Porter of Port Washington. He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Eugene Porter of Port Washington, who passed away July 23, 2005.
Joe attended Indian Valley High School and was a Baptist by faith. He was a member of the LOOM No. 740, Uhrichsville Moose Lodge and a social member of the VFW Post No. 7943 of Tuscarawas. He served as a parts and errands runner for Tony's Mart, Port Washington, for many years.
Joe was a kind and caring man who live his life to help others. He was the neighborhood taxi in bad weather. When others were afraid too drive, they depended on Joe to get them to work. Joe was an excellent driver and once rescued a woman who had fallen on her way to church in the cold weather.
Joe, like his late father, loved the great outdoors. He was the first to introduce his two nephews to the world of fishing and both became instant lovers of the sport of fishing. Joe also enjoyed hunting and camping.
In addition to his mother, Joe is survived by a brother, Mark A. (Kelly R.) Porter of Bolivar; a half brother, Ray E. Porter Jr. of Dennison; nephews, Kyle A. and Nick A. Porter, both of Bolivar; uncles, Raymond Eugene "Mike" (Charlotte) Porter of Port Washington and John (Janice) Neville of Wooster; and aunt, Bonnie Neville of Port Washington.
The family requests that memorials be made in Joe's name to the Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 W. Third St., Dover, OH 44622.
