Charles E. Holdsworth Jr., 71, formerly of Newcomerstown, passed away May 5, 2009, at Sequoia Hospital, Redwood City, Calif.

Charles, "Chuck," was born in Newcomerstown on Jan. 25, 1938, a son of the late Charles and Virginia Robe Holdsworth.

He was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School, Class of 1956. He graduated from The Ohio State University, receiving undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry. During his career, he worked in several research labs and hospitals. He was also the Director of Health and Safety for General Motors in Dayton; a toxicologist for the American Petroleum Institute in Washington D.C.; and a chemist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif.

He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Menlo Park, Calif.

Chuck is survived by his son, John Holdsworth of Los Gatos, Calif.; daughter, Julie (Tom) Bodiker of Englewood; son, David (Kelly) Holdsworth of Portage, Mich.; sister, Sandra (Lee) Phelan of Groveport; special niece, Shelly (Steve) Bessie and family of Grove City; special nephew, Patrick (Mala) Phelan and family of Ashland; four grandchildren, Nathan, Laura and Emma Bodiker of Englewood, and Ella Holdsworth of Portage, Mich.; an aunt, Dorothy Robe of Savage, Minn.; an uncle, Jack Mick of Sandusky; and numerous cousins.

A graveside memorial service will be Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown.

Rev. Russ Ham of the Christ United Methodist Church will officiate.
