Robert Vernon Fair, 78, of Freeport, passed away at 8:35 a.m., Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, in Union Hospital in Dover, following a long illness.

Born Feb. 15, 1931, in Londonderry Township, he was a son of the late Benjamin and Lyda (Tedrick) Fair.

He was a 1949 graduate of Freeport High School and a veteran of the Korean War. He served in Japan in 1952 and 1953. He was a member of the Deersville Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Church of the Nazarene of Tippecanoe.

Bob was employed by U.S. Concrete, Uhrichsville, for 20 years; Vale Coal Mine for five years; Y&O Coal Mine for nine years; and retired from Resource Exploration, Dennison, after 10 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and scrapping.

His wife of 56 years, Xerxa Murlene (Baumgardner) Fair, survives. They were married Oct. 28, 1952.

Also surviving are his sister, Martha Anne (Fair) Cole of Antrim; six children, Darlene (Darrell) Dakin of Honduras, Central America, Syliva (William) Thomas of Uhrichsville, Robert (Debra) Fair of Uhrichsville, Sue (Mark) Harper of Adrian, Ga., Scotty (Shirley) Fair of Freeport, and Bonnie (Jim) Baker of Freeport; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James Harrison Fair in 1979.

Services were Oct. 6, 2009, at the Koch Funeral Home, Freeport. Burial followed in the Guernsey County Memory Gardens in Cambridge.
