Ruth Ann (Swigert) Burrows, 79, of Newcomerstown, passed away late Saturday night, Oct. 3, 2009, in Union Hospital, Dover.

Ruth was born in Akron on June 13, 1930, a daughter of the late Charles H. and Elizabeth Dawson McCune Sr., who both died in 1981.

She attended Port Washington schools and was a homemaker for all her adult life. Ruth was also employed as a cafeteria worker in West Elementary School, Newcomerstown, for many years.

Ruth served as a volunteer for the Newcomerstown Temperance Tavern Museum and was a former member of the Newcomerstown Historical Society. She also served a term of office on the Newcomerstown Board of Public Affairs.

She was recently honored as Favorite Daughter of the Frontier Apple Festival in Newcomerstown, along with Favorite Son, Gene Poland.

Ruth was a former member of the Newcomerstown Church of God. In her earlier years, she sang with her family in the area churches. The Christian faith was a strong part of her entire life. Ruth also enjoyed reading, interior decorating and gardening.

Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband, James Lyle Swigert, who died in 1993, and whom she married on June 13, 1948.

Also deceased is her second husband, Robert "Bob" Burrows, Newcomerstown, formerly of Doylestown, who died in 1998 and whom she married in 1996; son-in-law, Robert D. Bricker of Newcomerstown, who died earlier this year; sisters, Kathleen Heston of Port Washington and Lillian McCune of Akron; brother, Charles H. "Chuck" McCune Jr. of Port Washington; sisters-in-law, Norma Jean (Mrs. Donald) McCune and A. Ruth (Mrs. Charles H. Jr.) McCune, both of Port Washington; and brother-in-law, Eugene Heston of Port Washington.

Ruth Ann is survived by two sons and a daughter, Stephen G. (Lisa L.) Swigert of Uhrichsville, Kathy J. Bricker of Newcomerstown and Jamie C. Swigert of Newcomerstown.

She also leaves her fiancé and care provider, R.E. "Gene" Poland of Newcomerstown; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Donald E. McCune of Newcomerstown, formerly of Port Washington; sister, Mary Lou (Harold "Hod") Huston of Port Washington; step-children, Tim (Bev) Burrows, Amy Burrows Cooper and Doc Burrows, all of Doylestown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services to celebrate Ruth Ann's life were Oct. 8 in the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown.

Pastor Brian Flood, Hospice of Tuscarawas County chaplain, conducted the services. Hospice of Tuscarawas County employee Beth Gardner also served as soloist and guitarist.

Burial followed in Salem-Union Cemetery, Port Washington.
