Beatrice M. Lanning, 87, Newcomerstown, passed away late Thursday morning, Jan. 14, 2010, in the Lafayette Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, West Lafayette, following a brief illness.

Beatrice was born in Clay Township, Tuscarawas County, May 12, 1922, a daughter of the late Harvey H. "Bunt" and Alice Elizabeth Huebner Kail. She was a graduate of Gnadenhutten High School, Class of 1940, and was the class valedictorian.

Beatrice was employed as a press operator with Tusco Manufacturing, Gnadenhutten, for 30 years before her retirement in 1972. She was a member of the West Union United Methodist Church, Washington Township, serving as a communion steward, Sunday school teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women's Group. She was a homemaker for all her adult life and enjoyed assisting her husband with operating the family farm, gardening and doing embroidery projects.

Beatrice was preceded in death by husband, Earl H. Lanning of Newcomerstown, who passed away May 11, 1983, and whom she married Sept. 10, 1942. Also deceased are a sister, Erma Jean Casteel of Newcomerstown; a brother, Bailey Kail of Gnadenhutten; brothers-in-law, Donald Casteel of Newcomerstown, Gerald Lanning of New Philadelphia, Cyril McMullen of Port Washington and John Lanning; and sisters-in-law, Vivian Lanning of New Philadelphia and Betty Lanning.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda M. Lanning and Sharon E. (Melvin D.) Duhamel, all of Washington Township, Newcomerstown; three granddaughters, Tamara L. (Brian) Emler of Newcomerstown, Brenda S. (Dan L.) Knotts of Hinsdale, Ill., and Christine M. Olsen of Gahanna; great-grandchildren, Lauren D. Hostetler of Strasburg, Blair and Courtney Emler, both of Newcomerstown, Devin, Jacob and Danielle Knotts, of Hinsdale, and Taylor Olsen of Gahanna; a great-great-grandson, Wade Emler of Newcomerstown; and her sister, Mary Alice (Richard M. "Dick") Hursey Sr. of Newcomerstown. Beatrice also leaves her special pet dog, Amanda, a long-haired Chihuahua.

Funeral services to celebrate Beatrice's life were Jan. 18, 2010, at the West Union United Methodist Church, Washington Township, Tuscarawas County. The Revs. Beth A. Mansperger and Tom Gruver conducted the services. Burial followed in the West Union Cemetery.

The Ourant Funeral Home in Newcomerstown was in charge of arrangements.
