JAMES V. NeSmith
James Vernon "Jim" NeSmith, 78, of Conesville (Wills Creek), formerly of Newcomerstown and Florida, passed away early Tuesday afternoon, March 23, 2010, in the emergency room of Coshocton County Memorial Hospital as the result of a drowning accident in Wills Creek, Coshocton County.
Jim was born in Marianna, Fla., on June 12, 1931, and was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil R. and Bessie K. Kerksey NeSmith.
Jim then spent a 20 year career in the Air Force where he served as a meat cutter. He was a staff sergeant and served in England and France, as well as duty tours in the states in California, Oregon, Washington and Florida before retiring from the Air Force in 1971. Jim then returned to civilian life and served as a meat cutter with the Fred Albright Grocery Store chain, Akron, for over 16 years. The Acme and Click grocery stores were included in this chain. Jim enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was a member of the Thomas Montgomery Post No. 431, Newcomerstown American Legion, the AMVETS Post No. 36, Coshocton, the Mohawk Post No. 2040, Coshocton VFW, and the LOOM Lodge No. 1337, Newcomerstown Moose.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a daughter, Katie NeSmith of Oregon; a sister, Betty Bridges of Blountstown, Fla.; and a brother-in-law, Hollis Deason of Grand Ridge, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, M. Emogene Garretson NeSmith, Conesville, formerly of Newcomerstown, whom he married April 13, 1998. Also surviving are four daughters and two sons, Lori Kasal and Jill Messer, both of Portland, Ore., Michelle V. (Alan) Boreman of Gnadenhutten, Shannon NeSmith of Uhrichsville, and James V. (Belinda) NeSmith Jr. and Scott R. NeSmith and fiancé Amy M. Ollis, all of Newcomerstown; two step-daughters, Sheila K. Triplet and fiancé Bill Bott of Cumberland and Belinda S. Wright of Newcomerstown; a step-son, William "Willie" (Jody) Croft of Newcomerstown; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Allene Deason of Grand Ridge, Fla., and Rhonda (Wallace) Howell of Bainbridge, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services to celebrate Jim's life were March 26, 2010, at the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. Ralph D. Maxwell Jr. conducted the services. Graveside services and burial followed on March 27 in the Community Chapel Cemetery, Washington Township, Tuscarawas County, where the Newcomerstown Veterans' Honor Guard also performed military graveside services.
