PORT WASHINGTON -- Charles Frederick "Fred" Smart, 68, a resident of the Lafayette Pointe Nursing Home, West Lafayette, formerly of Port Washington, passed away Sunday morning, June 13, 2010, in the Lafayette Pointe care facility.

Fred was born in Sugar Creek Township, Tuscarawas county, on Oct. 29, 1941, and was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin L. Smart Sr., who died in 1976, and Adeline Head Smart, who died in 1999.

He attended the First Baptist Church, Port Washington, and was employed in the Hopewell Developmental Disabilities workshop, Coshocton County. Fred enjoyed riding bicycles, taking car rides and enjoying the country scenery and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed collecting and working on bicycles, and also had collections of watches, sun glasses and clothing.

In addition to his parents, Fred was also preceded in death by six brothers, Frank E. Smart, Harry W. Smart and Clayton Smart, all of Port Washington, Elmer Smart of Newcomerstown, and infant brothers, Leonard and Howard Smart of Sugarcreek; a sister, Sylvia Beitzel of Mineral City; and brothers-in-law, Tom E. Kiste of Newcomerstown, Paul Triplett of Port Washington and Tom Beitzel of Mineral City.

Fred is survived by four brothers and four sisters, Bobby J. (Sharon) Smart of Gnadenhutten, Otto O. (Freda) Smart, Edith Triplett (Joe) Ellis, Barbara A. (Bert) Bryant Sr., all of Port Washington, Raymond and Margaret Smart of West Lafayette, Alvin L. Smart Jr. of Newcomerstown, Virginia (Jerry) Duvall of Dover and Zella Kiste of Newcomerstown; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were June 17, 2010, at the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. The Rev. Paul Schwab conducted the services. Burial followed at the Salem-Union Cemetery, Port Washington.

The family is suggesting that memorials be made in Fred's name to an individual's favorite charity.
