Vernon L. "Pappy" Durben, 90, of Newcomerstown, passed away Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at Union Hospital, Dover.

He was born Oct. 11, 1919, at Guernsey, to the late Ephriam J. Durben and the late Mary (Baker) Durben.

He was an Army World War II veteran and participated in five major battles in the European Theatre. He was a retired mechanic for Welker Sales and Service. He enjoyed playing cards and working in his garden.

Surviving are his spouse, Kathleen (Nay) Durben, whom he married March 22, 1941; three sons, Gary Durben of Cedarville, Robert (Diana) Durben of Navarre and Denny (Karen) Durben of Newcomerstown; two daughters, Deanna (Denny) Barlow of Newcomerstown and Cindy (Bob) Roe of Midland, Texas; seven grandchildren, Annette Durben, Neil Durben, Angie (Curtis) Goehring, Tammy (Jeff) Zimmer, Christopher Barlow, Anthony Roe and Seth Roe; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Ethel Pauline Durben.

Graveside service were Sept. 15, 2010, at the Earley's Cemetery, Newcomerstown. Military services were conducted by Newcomerstown Veterans' Honor Guard.
