James A. "Jim" Mathews, 62, Newcomerstown, passed away suddenly early Sunday afternoon, Jan. 23, 2011, in the emergency room of Union Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack at his Newcomerstown residence.
Jim was born in Dennison on March 25, 1948, a son of the late H. Eugene Mathews, who died in 1984, and the late Laura E. "Lillie" Thomas Mathews, who died in 1992.
He was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School, Class of 1966.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Sue Mathews of Newcomerstown.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Melanie R. Steed Mathews, Newcomerstown, whom he married Jan. 12, 1968.
Jim also leaves two daughters, Denise R. (James R.) Brosius Jr. and Keri B. (Andrew A. E.) Gingerich Jr., all of Newcomerstown; four grandchildren, Laura Courtney Brosius of New Philadelphia, and Logan R. T. Brosius, Garin A. Gingerich, and Alivia M. Gingerich, all of Newcomerstown; his brother, Jerry (Carol Sue) Mathews of Newcomerstown; several nieces and nephews, including nephew, Tim (Karen Stocker) Mathews of Newcomerstown, and niece, Tammy (Pastor Andy) McClung of New Philadelphia; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
To honor Jim's wishes, his family has chosen to cremate his remains. No visiting hours or memorial services will be observed, as per Jim's wishes.
The family is requesting that memorials be made in Jim's name to the Community Hospice of Tuscarawas, Carroll and Stark counties, 201 W. Third St., Dover, OH 44622; or the James A. Mathews Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 68, Newcomerstown, OH 43832.
The Ourant Funeral Home in Newcomerstown is assisting the family with all the arrangements.
