Ella R. Mathews, 89, Newcomerstown, passed away late Sunday night, March 13, 2011, in the Riverside Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Newcomerstown.
Ella was born in Guernsey County on Oct. 6, 1921, a daughter of the late Frank Miller Sherrard and the late Mary Belle Gadd Sherrard.
She was a homemaker for all her adult life and retired from the Newcomerstown School System where she was employed for many years as a custodian.
Ella attended the Calvary United Methodist Church, Newcomerstown, and enjoyed cooking, baking, quilting, and traveling.
Ella was preceded in death by husband, Richard L. "Shorty" Mathews, Newcomerstown, who passed away Aug. 9, 1998, and whom she married April 25, 1958. Also deceased are three brothers and two sisters, Robert Sherrard of Canton, and Wilmer Sherrard, Leonard Sherrard, Ruth Gibson, and Isabelle Armstrong, all of Cambridge.
She is survived by a daughter and a son, B. Louise Harrold Mann of Cambridge and Ronald L. Mathews and wife Renee "Sam" Schlupp of Newcomerstown; six grandchildren, Chad Robert (Jennifer) Mann of Cambridge, Robbie Shawn Mann of Port Washington, Jacob Lewis Mathews of Zanesville, Taylor Elise Mathews of Dover, Zoey Marie Mathews of Newcomerstown, and Connor Spring of Newcomerstown; two great-grandchildren, Abby Jo Mann and Benson A. Mann, both of Cambridge; a step-great-grandson, Michael Perkins of Cambridge; her sister, Jennie (Lawrence) Jackson of Cambridge; a brother-in-law, James Gibson of Cambridge; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Ella were March 18, 2011, in the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown
Burial followed in the Guernsey County Memory Gardens, Cambridge.
The family is requesting that memorials be made in Ella's name to the Community Hospice of Tuscarawas, Carroll, and Stark counties, 201 W. Third St., Dover, OH 44622.
