Allen Eugene "Al" Clawson, 72, of Kimbolton, formerly of the Tappan Lake area and Sullivan, Ashland County, passed away at his Kimbolton residence on Wednesday afternoon, April 13, 2011.

Allen was born in Ashland County on Sept. 8, 1938, a son of the late Marion H. and Elizabeth A. Knight Clawson. He was employed as a welder and maintenance worker with the Invacare Corp., Elyria, for 16 years. Prior to that, he was the owner and operator of Al's Auto Body Shop in Huntington for over 21 years. Al enjoyed racing modified cars and participated in races at the Midvale Speedway, the Orrville Speedway and the West Salem Speedway in Wayne County, and the Loudonville (Lakeville) Dragway. He also enjoyed many outdoor activities, including hunting and his special fishing trips to Quebec, Canada.

In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Beckett, Elyria.

He is survived by his best friend and longtime companion, Kathy S. DeMoss Chaffin, Kimbolton. Also surviving are three daughters and two sons, Barbara A. (Timothy A.) Steele of Creston, Susan Lucia of Grafton, Darla J. (Jeff) Vetta of Grafton, James E. "Jim" (Vickie) Commette of Columbia Station, and Michael Commette of Wellington; two grandchildren, Brandon (Kristen) Steele of Houston, Texas, and Brittney (Joel) McKee of Big Prairie; five step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Howard (Phyllis) Clawson of Kimbolton and William "Bill" Clawson of Bryson City, N.C.; two sisters, Alice (Henry) Crowell of Taylor, S.C., and Marian (George) Karas of Wellington; another brother-in-law, Robert "Bob" Beckett of Elyria; and his special friend, his cat, "Boots."

Funeral services to celebrate Allen's life were Sunday, April 17, 2011, at the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. The Rev. Henry Crowell officiated the services.

Following the funeral, Allen's family and friends were invited to a luncheon and reception at the Kimbolton Community Center. Burial will follow at a later date at Irish Ridge Cemetery, Monroe Township, Guernsey County.
