AKRON -- Martha Leora Beckley, 96, a resident of the Riverside Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Newcomerstown, for the past several years and a lifelong resident of Akron, passed away early Sunday evening, April 17, 2011, at the Riverside Manor care facility.
Leora was born in Akron on June 30, 1914, a daughter of the late Walter F. and Letha Butler Schick.
She was a graduate of Akron Garfield High School, Class of 1933. Leora was employed in the accounting department of the former O'Neil's Department Store, Akron, for over 20 years. Prior to that, she worked in the office of the Goodrich Company, Akron, during World War II. She was a member of the former Westlawn Methodist Church, Akron. Leora enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, and baking.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ison Cecil Beckley, Akron, who died Oct. 31, 1974. Also deceased are a great-grandson, Tyler Palmer, Toledo; two sisters and their husbands, Geraldine Schick Harvey and Edward Harvey, Akron, and Mabel Schick Fox and John Fox, Chesterland; and brother-in-law, David Mouer, Akron.
Leora is survived by a daughter, Cheryl (Gary) Palmer of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, Kenneth C. "Ken" (Janice) Beckley of Newcomerstown; five grandchildren, Jeffrey (Darlene) Palmer of Colorado Springs, Eric (Nicole) Palmer of Pensacola, Fla., Dwayne (Lori) Palmer of Toledo, Christopher Beckley of Milford Center, and Lisa Beckley Alexander of Corning, N.Y.; five great-grandchildren, Wendy Palmer of Ft. Stewart, Ga., Crystal Palmer and fiancé Rick Stinden of Junction City, Kan., Haley and Samantha Palmer of Toledo, and Alexandra "Alli" Beckley of Milford Center; three great-great-grandchildren, Zoey Palmer and Harley Palmer of Ft. Stewart, Ga., and Rylinn Palmer of Junction City, Kan.; a sister, Catherine Schick Mouer of Newcomerstown; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
To honor Leora's wishes, no visiting hours will be observed. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Graveside services and burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Akron.
