Robert Lawrence Jacobs, 84, a resident of Guernsey for many years, passed away late Friday night, March 2, 2012, at his Guernsey residence.
Robert was born in Cambridge on Dec. 8, 1927, a son of the late Lawrence and Alta Schwyhart Jacobs.
Robert was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Japan with the 209th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion with the Army of Occupation. Following Robert's return to civilian life, he was employed at the former Heller Brothers Tool Company, Newcomerstown, as an etcher for over 45 years before his retirement in 1989. Robert was also part owner of the former Guernsey Garage for a few years. He was a member of the VFW Post 7943, Tuscarawas. Robert enjoyed working on cars, fishing, an bowling with his family on special occasions. He also was a member of the golf league at Heller Borthers.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Lindell Jacobs, Guernsey, who died Oct. 10, 2005, and whom he married Sept. 11, 1948. Also deceased are a son, Bobby Joe Jacobs, Guernsey, who died in 2010; his brother, Jospeh Jacobs, Guernsey; and a daughter-in-law, Teri A. Jacobs, Reynoldsburg, who died in 2006.
He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Ellen Jacobs of Byesville; his son, Daniel R. Jacobs of Reynoldsburg; his daughter-in-law, Arlene L. Gardner Jacobs of Guernsey; four grandchildren, Brett C. Jacobs and fiance' Annette McKinney of Lombard, Ill., Alex Jacobs of Reynoldsburg, Evan Williams and Kenyarra "Sissy" Williams, both of New Concord; a special niece, Norma J. Shugart of Old Washington; a special great nephew, Harley Shugart of Old Washington; several members of the Lindell family; and his special friend, his cat, "Mittens."
The family also wants to thank his caregivers, Sharman and Mashelle, with Interim Home Health Care, and a special friend, Marla.
Funeral services to celebrate Robert's life were Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at the Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. The Rev. Garry Marlatt conducted the services. Burial followed in the Guernsey Cemetery, Zion Road, Wheeling Township, where the Newcomerstown Veterans Honor Guard performed military services.
