Ralph D. Tilton, 87, of Newcomerstown, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 7, 1925, in Port Washington, to the late Edwin Tilton Sr. and Helen (Davis) Tilton.
He was a 1943 Newcomerstown High School graduate.
He was a World War II Army veteran of the 1259th Engineer Combat Battalion from February 1944 to May 1946.
He retired in 1980 as postmaster of the Newcomerstown Post Office.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newcomerstown where he was former member of building committee, treasurer, deacon, and Sunday School teacher.
He was also a member of the American Legion Thomas C. Montgomery Post 431, past president and former member of Rotary Club, past master of Newcomerstown Masonic Lodge and a member for 60 years, and a member of Nugent Lodge for 60 years. He helped start the Tuscarawas County Council for Retarded Children and was a former chairman of PFVA.
He is survived by his wife, Martha J. (Patterson) Tilton, whom he married Feb. 20, 1949. Also surviving are two daughters, Barbara A. Tilton of Cambridge and Janet R. (Tony) Bailey of North Canton; three grandchildren, Sarah, Michael and Lisa Bailey; two sisters, Jeanne Kinsey of Columbus and Ann (Waldon) Walters of Newcomerstown.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Edwin Tilton Jr.
Services were July 9, 2012, in the Addy Funeral Home, Newcomerstown, with Pastor Tom Barber and Rev. Donald Silverthorne.
Burial was in the West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown. Military service was conducted by the Newcomerstown Veterans Honor Guard.
