Myrtle Irene (Smith) Geese, 91, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at Winchester Terrace Nurshing Home in Mansfield.

She was born Dec. 10, 1921, in Paris, Ohio, to the late James William and Minnie Elizabeth (Kube) Smith.

She was a 1940 graduate of Minerva High School in Minerva.

During World War II, she was a Pennsylvania Railroad Crossing Guard in Mansfield, where she waved to and caught and pocketed kisses from trainloads of troops as they passed by on their way to war.

On June 13, 1944, she married James J. Geese, a Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive engineerman and they had four children.

She loved reading and flower gardening and was active in Garden Club, Home Demonstration, PTA and at her church. During the 1970s and 1980s, she volunteered at Mansfield's Kingwood Center. Surviving are her son, William L. (Phyllis) Geese of Charlotte, N.C.; three daughters, Laurabelle (Dennis) Krinke Dennis of Renton, Wash., Janet (Rick) Cross of Rush, Colo., Susan (Pete) Lavergne of Bellville; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Stella (Donald) Storsin of Canton.

She was preceded in death by her husband on May 1, 1995, and a granddaughter, Hilary Cross.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services as Mrs. Geese's body has been cremated. Memorial contributions may be made to: Little Washington Congregational Church, 2323 Washington S. Rd., Mansfield, OH 44903.
