HICKSVILLE -- David C. Mayhew, 72, passed away Friday (Dec. 21, 2012) at his home following his courageous battle with cancer.

He was born June 14, 1940, in Coshocton, to Ruth Ortt Mayhew and Ianthus D. Mayhew, who preceded him in death.

He was a 1958 graduate of Newcomerstown High School.

On June 28, 1964, he married Diana McCleary, who survives in Hicksville.

Other survivors include two sons, David (Deanna) Mayhew of Hicksville and Dean (Sharon) Mayhew of Glandorf; two grandchildren, Kendall Mayhew and Conner Mayhew; three stepgrandchildren, Erica (Dennis) Vance, Cecelia Waters and Anissa Waters, all of Hicksville; one stepgreat-grandchild, Chloe Woodring; three brothers, Ianthus "Butch" Mayhew of Fremont, Michael "Mick" (Mary) Mayhew and Roy "Skeet" (Arlene) Mayhew, both of Newcomerstown. He had seven nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mayhew was a veteran of the U.S. Army, honorably discharged in April of 1964. He traveled the Midwest as a plastics salesman for many years. He was also the former owner of Hickory Hills Golf Club in Hicksville. He was a member of the Hicksville American Legion Post 223, the Hicksville Eagles Aerie 2556 and Butler Eagles, Butler, Ind. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing and spending time with his grandchildren. He will be missed for his ornery sense of humor, his love for a good debate, and his fondness for storytelling.

Visitation was Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville, where a memorial service followed.
