Walter H. "Wally" Bates, 71, of Newcomerstown, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, with his family by his side.

He was born Friday, Nov. 6, 1942, in Coshocton, to the late Herbert Leo Bates and Naomi June (Potts) Hart.

He was a 1960 graduate of Newcomerstown High School.

After completing high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force.

While in the service, he played on the Air Force traveling basketball team and worked for Boeing.

He was a founding partner of Rubber Roofers of Ohio. The last 20 years he was the owner and operator of Canal and River Car Sales in Newcomerstown. He was a 60 year member of the Newcomerstown Church of the Nazarene.

He enjoyed Bible Studies, spending time with his family, golfing, automobiles, and enjoyed watching the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, and the Cleveland Cavs. On Dec. 21, 1991, he married his wife Sally (Loader) Bates, who survives.

In addition to his wife, Walt is survived by his son, Kirk Bates and his wife Sonda of Newcomerstown; his daughter, Jennifer Hawk and her husband Mike of Dover; his step-sons, Jason Patterson of Strasburg and Adam Patterson of Newcomerstown; his grandchildren, Jacob Huffman, Zack and Emma Hawk, Maci and Gage Bates; and step grandchildren, Brady, Izzy and Ali Patterson; his sister Connie Spring and her husband Frank of Florida; and a half-sister, Mary Kurtz of Marietta, Ga.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty (Lewis) Bates; and his step-dad, Earl Hart.

Graveside services were Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, in West Lawn Cemetery with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating.

Military honors were conducted by the Newcomerstown Honor Guard.
