Marilyn Ann Atkinson, 83, of Newark, died peacefully surrounded by family at her daughter Julie's home in Newark on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015. Her husband, Donald Atkinson, said the cause was complications from a brain hemorrhage. Earlier in October she successfully completed chemotherapy treatment for colon cancer.
She was born Marilyn Ann Kohler on Dec. 1, 1932, in Newcomerstown. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Opal; and her elder siblings, Ruth Hurst,
Jane Worthington, Beryl DeRing, Robert Kohler, and Mary Watts.
She bolstered the integrity of the electoral process as a clerk at the Licking County Board of Elections, where she worked for over 31 years. She ensured the fair assignment and training of election personnel, certified candidate and issue petitions, and accounted for ballots across seven presidential, 14 congressional, and over 30 general, primary, and special elections. She worked joyfully and purposefully in the run-up to each, staying late into the night on election Tuesday so voter preferences could be counted precisely, fairly, and quickly. She retired in February of 2012.
She graduated from Newcomerstown High School in 1950 and shortly thereafter, moved to Newark to process Accounts Payable invoices at Continental Can.
On Oct. 14, 1955, she married fellow Newcomerstown native Donald "Don" Atkinson, with whom she had two children, James Donald and Julie Ann.
She enjoyed golf, where she won several local championships, and traveling -- she visited Italy, Yellowstone National Park, and Washington, DC with her family in recent years.
Besides her husband, Donald, she is survived by two children, James and Julie; three grandchildren, Adrienne, James Kohl, and Tony; and two great-grandchildren, James Perry and Luke.
A graveside service took place Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, at West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Central Ohio; donations can be made online at hopsiceofcentralohio.org or by mail at
