WINONA, Minn. -- Dorothy "Dot" Jane Edwards Hinds, 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016, at Lake Winona Manor.

She was born April 23, 1921, in Newcomerstown, Ohio, to Charles and Esther Edwards. Tragically, she lost her parents at age 15 in a car accident that claimed her best friend and left her hospitalized for weeks.

She lived with her mother's family until she went off to college at Kent State University. She kept in touch with her high school sweetheart, Walter, who had enlisted in the Army Air Corp [later the U.S. Air Force].

At the end of World War II, Dot traveled to Austria where she taught the children of GI's during the rebuilding of Europe.

On Sept. 27, 1952, Walter and Dot were married in New York City. The young couple and their four children settled in Winona, Minn., in 1964.

Family and church were the center of their lives. Dot was a very active member of Central United Methodist Church, volunteering her time and talents, regularly over the years. She was a frequent and long time volunteer at Watkins Home in Winona. Dot thoroughly enjoyed her membership in P.E.O. and many of the women she met there became life long friends. Dot taught in the Title One program in the Winona Public Schools for 13 years. Dot was devoted to her family. Her children, grandchildren and eventually her great grandchildren kept a sparkle in her eyes. Actually, any child in her proximity brought a smile to her face. Dot was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and her husband, Walter.

Dot is survived by her four children, Chip (Joan), Lee (David), Dave (Sook) and Dede (Dave); nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral for Dot took place at the Wesley United Methodist Church on Friday, Aug. 12, 2016.

Services entrusted to Fawcett Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
