CANTON -- A 20-point second quarter carried CVCA to an eventual 41-30 victory over the Indian Valley Braves on Friday, Sept. 17, as both teams' offenses rolled.
Indian Valley struck first, with sophomore kicker Nikolas Rose nailing a 27-yard field goal. CVCA came back to take the lead on a 31-yard pass play but the Braves ended the first quarter on top, 10-7, when Dusty Byers ran the kick-off back 86-yards for the score.
But that second quarter proved too much to overcome, particularly CVCA's Alex Utley, who ran for touchdowns on runs of 22-yards, 58-yards and 59-yards in the second quarter. The Braves failed to score in the quarter and trailed at the half, 27-10.
In the second half, the Braves tried to cut into the lead as Kyle Lehigh connected with Holden Fellers for a 19-yard touchdown that made it 27-17. But Utley scored his fourth touchdown on a 22-yard run and the Braves trailed 34-17 going into the fourth quarter.
CVCA extended the lead to 41-17 with a five-yard touchdown run before the Braves made a late comeback with two touchdown passes from Lehigh to Byers, on plays of 18-yards and 13-yards.
The loss left Indian Valley at 2-2 while CVCA improved to the same record.
