Division III District

St. Clairsville 52, Ridgewood 51

NEW PHILADELPHIA -- The putback made it but the clock didn't as the Generals lost a 52-51 heart-breaker to the Red Devils in a Division III semi-final game on Tuesday at New Philadelphia High School.

A missed Ridgewood shot came down into the hands of the General's Evan Jones, who put the ball back into the cylinder for what would have been the game-winning shot. But alas, the clock had just ticked to zero before Jones could get the ball into the cylinder and the celebration went to the St.Clairsville side.

A Ridgewood turnover at the 32 second mark gave the Red Devils the ball. The Generals quickly fouled but St. C. couldn't convert either free throw. The Generals worked for their shot before the ball went out of bounds at the six second mark - last touched by a Red Devil. That set up the final shot that made it through the cylinder just tenths of a second after the buzzer.

The Generals led 14-11 after the first quarter and 31-27 by halftime. The third period was the turning point as St. Clairsville sophomore Dan Monteroso scored 14 points to help his team use a 20-9 run and put the score at 47-40 in their favor.

Incredibly the Red Devils could only score five points in the fourth stanza including one bucket by Monteroso with 55 second left that turned out to be the winning shot. The Generals managed 11 points, one short of what they needed for overtime.

Senior Thomas Ellis scored 15 points to lead the Generals (16-7) while junior Tanner Stoffer came through with 13 on the strength of three buckets beyond the 3-point arc. Junior Evan Jones had a strong double-double with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior Richard Hawthorne scored eight points and senior Kevin Davis tacked on another five.

Monteroso finished with a game-high 24 points for St. Clairsville (21-2), who won/lost the district championship against Garaway on Friday. Allen Derosa added 10 points.

Division III Sectional Final

Ridgewood 44, Tusky Valley 41

UHRICHSVILLE -- The Generals won their first sectional championship since 1994 with a 44-41 victory over Tusky Valley last Saturday in the Division III final at Claymont High School. The win raised the team record to 16-6 and set up a district semi-final game with St. Clairsville (20-2) at New Philadelphia High School.

Ridgewood edged out to a 15-12 first quarter lead and used a 13-9 second quarter to take a 28-21 advantage into the lockers at halftime. Tusky Valley inched its way back with a 12-11 third period as Ridgewood owned a 39-33 lead headed into the fourth quarter.

The Orange and Black had a rough final eight minutes as they could only manage five points during that time with the first bucket coming with 48 seconds remaining. The Trojans closed to within one point at 39-38 but couldn't get over the hump on their next four possessions before Ridgewood's Evan Jones nailed a bucket and Kevin Davis added a free throw to make it 42-38. The Trojans then got a 3-pointer to close to 42-41 but could score no more, finishing with eight tallies during the period. Two technical fouls against Tusky Valley in the final seconds gave Tanner Stoffer the opportunity to make two free throws for the final margin.

Tusky Valley may have lost the game at the free throw line as the team made only 9-of-18 on the night, including a 0-for-3 showing in the final stanza.

Stoffer nailed four 3-pointers on his way to a team high 18 points to go with nine rebounds for Ridgewood. Jones was right behind with another 16 while Thomas Ellis had eight points and eight rebounds.

Clayton Patton had a game high 21 points for Tusky Valley (14-8).
