District II Championship

Steubenville 7, Indian Valley 6

STEUBENVILLE -- Heading into the bottom of the seventh, it looked like the Braves were on their way to the regional tournament. But Big Red had other plans as they lit up the scoreboard with five runs to pull out a 7-6 win in the District II championship held at Steubenville's Vaccaro Field.

Steubenville, who is ranked first in the state with a 20-1 record, was trailing 6-2 with not much hope for advancing. Anthony Piero began the inning with an innocent single that soon mushroomed into a run scoring derby. Piero eventually got to bat again and drilled a base hit to left field with two outs and the bases loaded for the game winning score.

Also during the inning, Jordan Myer, who also was the winning pitcher, clubbed a home run that also brought in Piero to make the score 6-4. A few walks, two singles, and a catcher interference later, and the game was tied.

Holden Fellers cracked an RBI single in the second inning while Logan Cozart drew a bases-loaded walk for another. Chase Burcher came through with an RBI single to put the Braves up 3-0.

More runs came in the fourth for the Indian Valley by way of RBI singles from Kyle Lehigh and Zane Shuss which made the score 5-2. A Jonathon Howard RBI base hit in the fifth gave the Braves a 6-2 lead.

Cozart took the mound loss as he gave up 10 hits, including five in the seventh inning, struck out nine, and issued five walks.

Brandon Fox finished with three singles while Shuss rapped two to lead the Brave's hitting.
