NEW PHILADELPHIA -- Garaway ended Sandy Valley's 10-year stranglehold on the Inter-Valley Conference wrestling crown as the Pirates outscored the Cardinals 397-344 to claim top honors. The tournament was held at Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School last Saturday.

Newcomerstown finished a solid third with 269 points, followed by Ridgewood (236), Malvern (206) and Tusky Catholic (108).

The Trojans had three individual champions - Cole McVay at 132, Trae Garlando at 170 and Mitchell Meeks at 195.

Other Newcomerstown place-winners were Zack McKibben, second at 113; Alan Hayhurst, third at 120; Hunter Stringer, third at 126; Kyle Pritchard, third at 145; Chase Eggleston, fourth at 152; and Jarred Weaver, fourth at 138.

Champions for Ridgewood included Cole Zeigler (120), Phillip Shannon (138), Jake Ziegler (160), and Joe Holmes (heavyweight).

Other General place-winners were third to Kelly Barthalow (220) and Garret Bethel (152), and fourth to Thor Reed (132).

Garaway's Steven Farrow (182) was selected Wrestler of the Year while Garaway's Sedrick Gerber was Coach of the Year.

Warner named Wrestler of the Year

CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Indian Valley's Darran Warner (126) was named Wrestler of the Year at the PAC tournament held at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy High School last Saturday.

Warner did so by claiming his third championship in a row and in the process, set the school record for wins at 135, surpassing Bo Gilmore's old mark of 133.

The Braves finished second in the team standings with 128.5 points as CVCA won the team title with 220 points.

Picking up second places finishes for Indian Valley were Dakota Smith (113), Austin Western (132) and Dominic Bell (182) while third place went to Matt Bobzein (170), Ben Aponic (220) and Logan Ridgeway (285). Earning fourth place were Heath Williams (106), Travis Riddle (145) and Dalton Farrow.

The Braves' Bill Gilmore was tabbed Coach of the Year.

Indian Valley places sixth

UHRICHSVILLE -- Indian Valley came in sixth out of 11 teams at the Division II sectional tournament held at Claymont High School last week. To no one's surprise, Claymont ran off with the team championship.

The Mustangs racked up 282 points with Minerva second with 162. River view took third (134.5) followed by Tri-Valley (132), New Philadelphia (118.5), Indian Valley (118), West Holmes (110), Dover (98), Cambridge (96), Morgan (77.5) and Meadowbrook (39).

The Braves' Darran Warner (126) and Dominic Bell (182) finished second while Dakota Smith and Dalton Farry (195) were third. Austin Western (132) and Ben Aponik (220) came in fourth.

The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to the Division II District Tournament at Claymont High School in Uhrichsville.

Wrestlers place fourth in sectionals

CARDINGTON -- At the Division III sectional at Cardington Lincoln High School, Ridgewood had three wrestlers move on to districts while Newcomerstown advanced two.

For the Generals, Cole Zeigler was the 120-pound champion while Jake Zeigler (160) was third. Heavyweight Joe Holmes came in fourth.

In winning his title, Cole Zeigler pinned Northmor's Sam Neer of Northmor and then won a 6-2 decision over Newark Catholic's Nate Ohl. In the title match, Zeigler scored an 8-6 decision over Lincoln's Adam Reed.

For the Trojans, Mitchell Meeks (195) and Trae Garlando (160) finished fourth.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the district tournament at Heath.

Newark Catholic won with sectionals with 158 points. Ridgewood was 10th with 76 while Newcomerstown was 11th with 72.5 points.
