UHRICHSVILLE -- A fast start quickly faded with a rough second stanza for the Ridgewood High Generals in stumbling to a 46-32 loss to Tuscarawas Valley High in Division III Sectional Tournament action at Claymont High on Friday.
The Generals looked ready to run the Trojans right out of the gym in the opening quarter, racing out to a 13-4 lead with senior Zak Keesee knocking down a three-pointer to just beat the buzzer for the early RHS advantage.
But how things changed in the second period, as the Trojans went right to work and took control of the contest. With sophomore Jordan Feigenhauer leading the way, Tusky Valley quickly reeled off a 9-0 run to deadlock the contest at 13-13 on a three-point make by Ryan McClelland at the 4:39 mark of the period.
Tusky Valley was far from finished as they closed the first half with another 9-0 run while shutting the Generals out to win the quarter by a huge 18-0 margin to take a 22-13 lead into the halftime intermission. Feigenhauer pumped in 11 first half points to lead the Trojans' charge.
"I just think we got complacent once we took that big lead after the first quarter," Ridgewood coach Alan Keesee said. "Our decision making also had a lot to do with it. But to their credit, once they got hot, they kept it going the rest of the game."
In the third period, the Trojans made it 23 unanswered points with a trey from Zach Lewis and a Felgenhauer lay-up to extending their lead to 27-13 at the 6:11 mark of the third period. Tusky Valley would close the quarter with a 33-20 lead heading to the fourth stanza with a slim 11-9 scoring edge in the quarter.
Needing a big final quarter, the Generals were unable to mount the comeback with Tusky Valley holding on for the opening round sectional win with a 13-12 edge in the fourth quarter.
Tusky Valley entered the night with a record of 6-16, but Keesee feels that mark was not a true indication of the Trojans' skill level.
"They had the right match-ups against us and their record isn't an indication of how good they really are," Keesee said. "They did a lot of things right, attacked our weaknesses, and ultimately wound up winning the ball game."
Felgenhauer finished with 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Tusky Valley (7-16), while Alex Krocker added 11 and McClelland chipped in with six on a pair of three-pointers.
Keesee led Ridgewood with 12 points on the night, while senior C.J. Grove contributed 11 points and seven rebounds for RHS. Junior Ryan Lowe added seven rebounds and four points for the Generals.
Seniors who played their final basketball game for the Generals included Joey Raach, Tyler Davis, Keesee, Dillion McPherson and Grove.
Ridgewood finishes the season with a mark of 10-13 overall.
