The Newcomerstown Board of Education approved April 15 the appointment of Rod Bonamico as the head boys' basketball coach at Newcomerstown High School.
Bonamico has spent time at Claymont and was last coaching basketball at TCC.
At Tuscarawas Central Catholic, he took over a 2-19 team and in his first year, posted an 8-14 record. In his third year at Central his team compiled a record of 15-7 and Coach Bonamico was nominated as District V Coach of the Year for the 2009-2010 season.
Coach Bonamico was at Central for 4 seasons.
"We're excited to have Coach Bonamico coaching basketball for us at Newcomerstown," said Newcomerstown Athletic Director Eric Brock. "He impressed our entire search committee with his knowledge and passion for the game and he is currently teaching physical education here at the high school so it turned out to be a great fit. Coach Bonamico, helped me with football last season and did such a great job with the kids, so I know how he coaches."
"I'm very excited about the challenge and opportunity to work with the Newcomerstown student athletes. Our facilities are excellent and the excitement shown from our kids has been great. Our league is well represented at the district, regional and state levels every year. The IVC is one the best Division III/IV leagues in the state. I have a lot of respect for the coaches in our league," said Coach Bonamico.
Coach Bonamico will be working to establish an off-season conditioning program and assembling his staff over the next few weeks.
