NEWCOMERSTOWN -- A pair of fourth quarter touchdowns sealed an Inter-Valley Conference road win for Sandy Valley on Friday night, with the Cardinals recording a 31-14 victory over the Newcomerstown High Trojans to spoil Homecoming fesitivites for the Orange and Black.
Holding a slim 17-14 lead entering the final stanza, the Cardinals got a pair of touchdown runs from Lucas Dieffenbaugher to hold on for the victory and improve to 3-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in IVC play.
Dieffenbaugher started with a short one-yard plunge to paydirt to extend the Sandy Valley lead to 24-14, and then followed up with a 30-yard sprint to the end zone for the final 31-14 count.
Newcomerstown got on the board first in the contest with a first period score, with Austin King hauling in an 11-yard toucdown pass from QB Austin Zufelt for an early 7-0 lead after King added the PAT kick.
Sandy Valley pulled even with a first period TD of their own, with Dieffenbaugher tacking on a one-yard scoring run and Jacob Wagner added the PAT boot for the 7-7 tie.
In the second quarter, the Sandy Valley defense delivered a big play, with defensive lineman Avery Elifritz scooping up a fumble and rumbling 96 yards for the score to give the Cardinals a 14-7 lead at the halftime break.
Wagner opened the third quarter with his foot, extending the Sandy Valley lead out to 17-7 with a field goal.
Cody Hall pulled the Trojans closer at 17-14 in the third quarter by ripping off a 60-yard rushing touchdown before Dieffenbaugher closed out the win with his pair of fourth quarter TD runs.
Dieffenbaugher finished with 179 yards on 23 carries for Sandy Valley, and completed 2-of-2 passes for another 72 yards.
Newcomerstown was paced by Hall who ended his night 120 yards rushing on 12 attempts, while running mate Jabril Dansby added 97 in his 22 carries. Zufelt finished hitting on 8-of-14 passing attempts for 63 yards, with King racking up five catches for 39 yards with one TD reception.
