HEBRON -- Newcomerstown High sophomore Brittney Roth had a pretty special day on Saturday at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Cross Country Championships held at National Trial Raceway.
Roth, competing in the Divison III girls division finished in 15th place with a time of 19:14.2 to earn All-Ohio honors to become the first female cross country runner in Newcomerstown history to garner All-Ohio honors and just the second Newcomerstown cross country runner to accomplish the feat. NHS standout Dan Mozena claimed All-Ohio honors for the Trojans back in 1980 with a 12th place finish.
Athena Welsh of St. Thomas Aquinas claimed first place in the Divsion III race with a winning time of 17:58.6.
But on this day it was all about Roth who joined select company by bringing home the All-Ohio honors.
"I'm just so proud of her," Newcomerstown coach Troy Mozena said. "She's always had the ability to get it done...and now that's she has got it done a lot of pressure is off her."
Roth's big day also capped a highly successful cross country season for the Trojans with the boys teams qualifying for the Divison III regionals along with Roth.
"Brittney performance today really closes out a good season for us," Mozena added. "Her effort along with the boys team making it to regionals will hopefully continue us to be able to grow our cross country program."
With Roth just being a sophomore, she will have two more years to compete and maybe even improve on Saturday's finish.
Also in action on Saturday was the Indian Valley's boys team which finished in 15th place in the Division II boys team standings with 392, with Lexington finishing in first place with a total of 54 points.
Hunter Probert led the Braves' effort with a 54th place showing with a time of 16:52.0, followed by Trevor Ault (104th, 17:31.9), Cody Booth (123rd, 17:59.6), Adam Lenhoff (126th, 18:06.5), Mitchell Troyer (137th, 18:36.5), Collin Border (138th, 18:42.2), and Clay Riddle (143rd, 19:25.2).
