Massillon Tuslaw 55, Indian Valley 28
MASSILLON -- Getting out of the gate quickly the host Tuslaw Lady Mustangs galloped past the visiting Indian Valley Lady Braves 55-28 in Principals Athletic Conference action Wednesday.
The Lady Mustangs opened with a 23-8 scoring edge the initial quarter and never looked back as they out scored Indian Valley 14-4 the second round to build a commanding 37-12 lead going to the locker room at the halftime break.
Following halftime, the onslaught continued with Tuslaw posting another 14-4 frame to build its lead to 51-16 going to the final eight minutes. Indian Valley rallied in the final stanza to out score the Lady Mustangs 12-4 to cut the difference to the final 55-28 score.
The Lady Mustangs were 25-of-57 from the field for 43.8 percent, including 2-of-10 from beyond the arc. They added 3-of-7 from the foul line. Sierra Lau paced Tuslaw with 16 points followed by Mayci Sales with 12 and Faith Lau with 11 counters. Bethany Koons added seven points in the winning effort.
Tuslaw dished out five assists and picked off 10 steals, while posting a 31-26 rebounding advantage paced by Sales with 10 boards to complete the "double-double" with S. Lau hauling in five caroms.
Indian Valley was 13-of-45 from the floor for just 28.8 percent and tacked on 2-of-10 from the bonus line. Megan Baker led the Lady Braves in scoring with eight points followed by Kitanna Rakestraw with seven and Kiarra Rakestraw with six markers. IV had four assists, two by Kiarra Rakestraw and five steals with Kitanna Rakestraw grabbing a pair.
The Lady Mustangs claimed a 31-26 rebounding advantage with Kiarra Rakestraw pulling down 10 for the Lady Braves and Baker added six. Mayci Sales paced Tuslaw on the glass with 10 boards.
Malvern 85, Newcomerstown 23
MALVERN -- Homestanding Malvern High pinned an 85-23 setback on Newcomerstown in the regular season finale for the Inter-Valley Conference foes on Saturday.
Malvern (18-4, 12-4 IVC) vaulted to a 26-2 lead after one quarter and coasted to the victory. The Lady Hornets led 46-9 at the half and 68-17 after three periods.
Sara Loomis paced Malvern with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Tara Tucci chipped in 14 and Kelsi Hulit added eight.
For Newcomerstown (1-21, 0-16 IVC), Susanna Hall scored seven points while Amaris Wells and Brea Garretson each had four.
NEXT --Newcomerstown plays Tuscarawas Valley in the Division III Sectional at Dover on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Indian Valley 61, River View 57
GNADENHUTTEN -- Host Indian Valley held on for a 61-57 home court victory over River View in non-league girls basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
River View jumped out to a quick 12-9 lead after the opening quarter of play. But the Lady Braves regrouped in the second stanza to post a 19-11 scoring edge to lead 28-23 at the halftime break.
Kiarra Rakestraw tallied a game-high 20 points to pace Indian Valley, while Courtney Mizer added 14, Alisha Garbrandt chipped in with 12 and Kitanna Rakestraw finished with eight markers for the Lady Braves.
River View was led by Cydney Whiteus with 13 points with Cassidy Whiteus posting 11 points for the Lady Bears.
