A well-balanced lineup figures to tee it up for the Newcomerstown High golf team this fall as Coach Frank Ackerman welcomes back five lettermen.

"The team has five returning lettermen and there was only 1.14 strokes difference between number one man and number five man last year, so it is going to be very competitive," said Ackerman, who begins his fourth year at the NHS helm and 20th year overall as a coach.

Senior Bailey Guy, a three-year letterman, heads the list of returning veterans. Last year's leading scorer, Guy earned honorable mention all-Inter Valley Conference recognition at season's end.

Juniors Thurman Gibson and Levi Kilpatrick and sophomores Brandon Cutschall all figure to be among the top four in the lineup.

Gibson is a two-year letterman while Kilpatrick and Cutschall are both one-year monogram winners.

The battle for the fifth and sixth varsity spots figures to come from these five juniors -- lettermen Kaden Shepherd and Chase Arnold along with Kayla Gibson, Austin McMullen and Jacob Kennedy.

Newcomers to the squad who've all shown steady improvement over the summer according to Coach Ackerman include junior Parker Norman, sophomore Mitch Casteel and freshman Braiden Guy.

"We hope to improve over last year's IVC finish," said Ackerman, whose team posted an overall record of 12-83 while placing seventh in the IVC. "We might surprise a few teams this year. The players are taking things a little more seriously and hopefully it will show in our win-loss record."
