Three conference teams win district titles
Not one, not two but three boys basketball teams in the Inter-Valley Conference captured Eastern District championships on Friday.
Both Division III crowns were won by IVC teams, with Hiland defeating Tuscarawas Valley, 60-45, in the only match-up where the conference wasn't assured of a winner while Garaway beat Sandy Valley, 54-46, in the other D-III final.
Malvern made it a sweep by defeating fellow IVC member Strasburg, 53-41, in the Division IV championship game.
At Dover, Hiland led 14-11 after one quarter and 25-15 at the half en route to its win over Tusky Valley.
Christopher Cline and Turner Horn both tallied 21 points for the Hawks (21-4) while Dylan Vaughn led Tusky Valley (11-15) with 15 markers.
The Hawks will play either Southeastern or Oak Hill in the D-III Regional semifinals Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Ohio University Convocation Center in Athens.
At Claymont, Garaway led 16-13 after one quarter, but Sandy Valley used a 16-6 edge in the second period to move on top, 26-22, at the half. Garaway regained the lead at 35-33 after three rounds.
Ty Hamsher poured in 29 points to lead the Pirates (19-6) while Joel Honigford had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Bruce Offenberger and Dan Bartholomet topped Sandy Valley (14-11) with 19 and 17, respectively.
The Pirates will take on either South Point or Proctorville Fairland in the D-III Regional semifinals Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. at the Ohio University Convocation Center in Athens.
At New Philadelphia, Malvern led throughout en route to its third district title in four years. The Hornets were on top 17-14, 26-21 and 38-32 at the quarter breaks.
Mark Mayle led a trio of double-digit scorers with 15 points while Jaret Majestic and Drew Hutchison both had 13. Shane Javersak scored 13 for Strasburg (23-3) and Jay DiBacco had nine.
Malvern meets Cleveland Heights Lutheran East in the D-IV Regional semifinals on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. at the Canton Fieldhouse.
